S1 · Ep. 6
Under the Knife: What Happens While You’re Asleep
Ever wondered what goes on in theatre after the anaesthetist says ‘count backwards from ten’? We take you through surgery from the night before to the recovery ward.
Show notes
The scariest part of surgery is usually the part you don’t understand. So let’s understand it.
In this episode
- Why fasting before surgery matters (it’s about your lungs, not punishment)
- What your anaesthetist is checking, and why you must be honest about alcohol, smoking and herbs
- Who is in the theatre and what each person does
- The safety checklist that happens before the first cut
- Recovery: pain control, walking early and warning signs after you go home
Warning signs after surgery
Go back to hospital urgently if you have a fever, a wound that is red, hot, swollen or leaking pus, severe or worsening pain, chest pain, shortness of breath, or swelling and pain in one leg.
